Charlie Bathgate, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist
About Me
I believe that much of the pain we experience comes from a disconnect between our authentic selves and our narratives of who we "should be.”
Therapy is an opportunity to deepen our self-understanding, recognize the forces that created this painful divide, and explore ways to heal and move forward.
Feeling seen and heard by a trained professional can make an immense impact on our emotional and mental well-being. Developing simple skills and techniques for better coping can also be transformative, and is eminently achievable in the right therapeutic setting. A little humor and warmth doesn’t hurt either.
I view my work primarily through the lenses of Existential Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Mindfulness. I also utilize techniques from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Somatic Therapy, and performance psychology where appropriate. I strive to make every session trauma-informed and believe that progress is only possible in the context of a trusting, supportive relationship between therapist and client.
Background and Education:
I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist with a Masters in Counseling Psychology from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. I completed my training practicum at the California Pacific Medical Center Integrative Therapy Program, where I provided therapeutic support to individuals from diverse backgrounds facing mental health challenges including depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, family crises, and existential overwhelm resulting from severe medical diagnoses. I have also completed the Alchemy Community Therapy Center Ketamine Therapy Provider Training, and I served on the Board of Directors for the organization from 2020 to August of 2024.
I graduated from Duke University with degrees in English and Business. Prior to becoming a therapist, I founded and ran multiple businesses in the financial services and online education sectors.
